This short trip gives you the chance to experience the diverse desert, steppe, taiga, and mountain landscapes of Mongolia. Bayangobi (meaning rich gobi) has a completely unique ecology, with mountains, sand dunes and freshwater marshlands (frozen during winter)! The wildlife is abundant and you are sure to see many birds of prey in the Khugno Khan National Park. Ride a camel, climb on sand dunes and discover the hidden ruins of a 17th century monastery. Visit the ancient capital of Kharkhorin to see the peaceful lives of the Buddhist Monks, now living and studying in the Erdene Zuu Monastery. You can also see the world’s only remaining truly wild horses at the world famous Khustai National Park. Have an adventure in the Terelj National Park, a beautiful area of forests, rivers and mountains before seeing the majestic Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue.
Day 1: Drive to Bayangobi and hike in the Khugno Khan National Park. RIde a Bactrian camel on the Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes.
Day 2: Visit the site of the ancient capital Kharkhorin, now the home to one of the largest Buddist Monasteries in Mongolia, Erdene Zuu.
Day 3: Join a safari to see the Przewalski’s horse in Hustai National Park.
Day 4: Horse ride in the beautiful Terelj National Park. Enjoy dog sledding or kayaking, depending on the time of year.
Day 5: Climb to the top of the Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue for spectacular views.
Day 1 – In the early morning set out into the steppe, leaving the city behind you. Arrive at the Khugno Khan National Park and enjoy a BBQ lunch. Hike in the mountains and visit a 17th century Monastery ruin, hidden in the rocky mountain valley. Meet a camel herding family and mount up for your 1 hour camel ride along the sand dunes. Explore the 80km long sand dunes and beautiful surrounding area. This afternoon you may like to visit the nearby lake, rich in wildlife, especially migratory birds. In the evening, meet your host family and settle into your gers. Tonight you can make dinner with your host family and learn how to make some traditional Mongolian dumplings. Overnight in a ger next to a Nomadic family.
Day 2 – Today visit Kharkhorin, the location of the ancient capital city of the Mongol Empire. It is now the site of one of the largest Buddhist Monasteries in Mongolia, Erdene Zuu. Visit the Kharkhorin museum and explore the monastery. You can also see the Three Empires Monument, which gives you a bird’s eye view of the Orkhon valley, where three empires are said to have come together. Return East after lunch perhaps taking a hike through the unique juniper shrubs and search for wildlife such as steppe eagle and deer. Or if you like go for another camel ride! Try star gazing in the evening. Overnight in a ger next to a Nomadic Family.
Day 3 – After breakfast head to Khustai National Park. At Khustai, head on into the protected zone and start the safari to the mountain where the Przewalski’s Horse can be found. Take a short hike to get closer to these ancient wild animals. Opportunities for more hiking in this area.
You will arrive at Terelj National Park in the early evening. See the majestic Turtle Rock and visit the Aryabal Meditation Temple for a peaceful walk up into the mountain and spectacular views of the National Park. Overnight at a ger camp, with western facilities and electricity, twin ger.
Day 4 – In the morning enjoy a 1-2 hour gentle horse ride through the beautiful National Park. This landscape is similar to the Northern Mongolian “Taiga” and is rich in flora and fauna. Finish the horse ride and enjoy a traditional BBQ lunch, called khorhog, before starting your optional afternoon activity. In the late afternoon do some hiking and explore more of the National Park. Overnight next to nomadic family, shared gers.
Optional afternoon activities include:
A longer horse trek through the beautiful forest and up into the mountain valleys.
Kayaking or rafting on the peaceful Terelj and Tuul rivers (subject to availability/summer only).
Hiking with our siberian husky dogs through the beautiful forests and mountain terrain.
Dog sledding experience over the frozen river (subject to availability/winter only)
Day 5 – Today visit the Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue. Learn about Mongolia’s fierce hero and the legacy he left behind. Try on traditional costumes and go to the top of the 40m tall statue for photo opportunities.
Return to Ulaanbaatar in the afternoon and enjoy a traditional song and dance performance (highly recommended). Transfer to your accommoda

Why not add an extra day to visit the serene Ugii Lake if you’d like to try a spot of fishing or just to see one of Mongolia’s many fresh water lakes. Ugii Lake is a Ramsar Registered lake, and is protected for the migratory birds that visit, especially during late spring and autumn.
